The goal of the negative security model is to identify and block known undesirable quantities, leaving all remaining elements to implicitly pass through the given control point. Negative security models are often referred to as “blacklists.”

In security applications, negative security models are often used for purposes such as SMTP server blacklists, web application input validation, and border router ACLs.
